Elizabeth (Miller) Knauf was born in Germany to parents of German citizenship.

She and her family were actually enumerated twice in the 1870 U.S. census, once at Dwelling Number 301[1] and again at Dwelling Number 492,[2] both in Indianapolis Ward 2 of Marion County, Indiana.
